jab jareeaai tab hoi bhasam tan rahai kiram dhal khaiee ||
When the body is burnt, it turns to ashes; if it is not cremated, then it is eaten by armies of worms.
kaachee gaagar neer parat hai iaa tan kee ihai baddaiee ||1||
The unbaked clay pitcher dissolves, when water is poured into it; this is also the nature of the body. ||1||
kaahe bhieeaa firatau fooliaa fooliaa ||
Why, O Siblings of Destiny, do you strut around, all puffed up with pride?
jab dhas maas uradh mukh rahataa so dhin kaise bhooliaa ||1|| rahaau ||
Have you forgotten those days, when you were hanging, face down, for ten months? ||1||Pause||
jiau madh maakhee tiau saThor ras jor jor dhan keeaa ||
Like the bee which collects honey, the fool eagerly gathers and collects wealth.
maratee baar leh leh kareeaai bhoot rahan kiau dheeaa ||2||
At the time of death, they shout, ""Take him away, take him away! Why leave a ghost lying around?""||2||
dhehuree lau baree naar sa(n)g bhiee aagai sajan suhelaa ||
His wife accompanies him to the threshold, and his friends and companions beyond.
maraghaT lau sabh log kuTa(n)b bhio aagai ha(n)s akelaa ||3||
All the people and relatives go as far as the cremation grounds, and then, the soul-swan goes on alone. ||3||
kahat kabeer sunahu re praanee pare kaal gras kooaa ||
Says Kabeer, listen, O mortal being: you have been seized by Death, and you have fallen into the deep, dark pit.
jhooThee maiaa aap ba(n)dhaiaa jiau nalanee bhram sooaa ||4||2||
You have entangled yourself in the false wealth of Maya, like the parrot caught in the trap. ||4||2||
End of the Hukamnama
Past seven days
What is a Hukamnama?
Each morning at Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, after Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is opened with prayer, the Granthi reads the shabad at the top of the left page the Guru opens to. That shabad is the Hukamnama, the Guru's order for the day. The word joins hukam, an order, and nama, a letter.
It is taken once and shared everywhere, so a Sikh in Amritsar and one in California read the same shabad that day. Many Sikhs read it after their morning Nitnem, or listen to it on the way to work, and carry a line of it through the day.
This page shows the day's Hukamnama in Gurmukhi with a transliteration and English translation, and the recording of it when one is available. The Simran app brings it to your phone each morning, with the lock screen widget showing the first line where you will see it first.
Frequently asked questions
What time is the Hukamnama taken?
It is taken at Sri Harmandir Sahib early in the morning, India time, and appears here soon after. India is twelve and a half hours ahead of California and five and a half hours ahead of London, so by the clock in North America the new Hukamnama usually arrives the evening before.
Why does the date look a day ahead of mine?
The date is the day in Amritsar, where the Hukamnama is taken. When it is Tuesday morning there it is still Monday evening in most of the Americas.
Can I read an earlier Hukamnama?
The past seven days are listed above. Each opens that day's full shabad in Gurmukhi with transliteration and English.
How do I get the Hukamnama on my lock screen?
The Simran app has a Daily Hukamnama widget for the lock screen on iPhone and Android. Add it once and the day's shabad is there each morning. The lock screen widget page walks through the setup.
