That humble being who eliminates his ego is at peace; he is blessed with an ever-stable intellect.

That humble being is immaculately pure, who, as Gurmukh, understands the Lord, and focuses his consciousness on the Lord's Feet. ||1||

ਹਰਿ ਚੇਤਿ ਅਚੇਤ ਮਨਾ ਜੋ ਇਛਹਿ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

har chet achet manaa jo ichheh so fal hoiee ||

O my unconscious mind, remain conscious of the Lord, and you shall obtain the fruits of your desires.

By Guru's Grace, you shall obtain the sublime elixir of the Lord; by continually drinking it in, you shall have eternal peace. ||1||Pause||

satigur bheTe taa paaras hovai paaras hoi ta pooj karaae ||

When one meets the True Guru, he becomes the philosopher's stone, with the ability to transform others, inspiring them to worship the Lord.

ਜੋ ਉਸੁ ਪੂਜੇ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਦੇਵੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥੨॥

Without becoming the philosopher's stone, he does not inspire others to worship the Lord; without instructing his own mind, how can he instruct others?

guroo sadhaae agiaanee a(n)dhaa kis oh maarag paae ||3||

The ignorant, blind man calls himself the guru, but to whom can he show the way? ||3||

ਨਾਨਕ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਦਰੀ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ॥

naanak vin nadharee kichhoo na paieeaai jis nadhar kare so paae ||

O Nanak, without His Mercy, nothing can be obtained. One upon whom He casts His Glance of Grace, obtains Him.

End of the Hukamnama

Past seven days

What is a Hukamnama?

Each morning at Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, after Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is opened with prayer, the Granthi reads the shabad at the top of the left page the Guru opens to. That shabad is the Hukamnama, the Guru's order for the day. The word joins hukam, an order, and nama, a letter.

It is taken once and shared everywhere, so a Sikh in Amritsar and one in California read the same shabad that day. Many Sikhs read it after their morning Nitnem, or listen to it on the way to work, and carry a line of it through the day.

This page shows the day's Hukamnama in Gurmukhi with a transliteration and English translation, and the recording of it when one is available. The Simran app brings it to your phone each morning, with the lock screen widget showing the first line where you will see it first.

Frequently asked questions

What time is the Hukamnama taken?

It is taken at Sri Harmandir Sahib early in the morning, India time, and appears here soon after. India is twelve and a half hours ahead of California and five and a half hours ahead of London, so by the clock in North America the new Hukamnama usually arrives the evening before.

Why does the date look a day ahead of mine?

The date is the day in Amritsar, where the Hukamnama is taken. When it is Tuesday morning there it is still Monday evening in most of the Americas.

Can I read an earlier Hukamnama?

The past seven days are listed above. Each opens that day's full shabad in Gurmukhi with transliteration and English.

How do I get the Hukamnama on my lock screen?

The Simran app has a Daily Hukamnama widget for the lock screen on iPhone and Android. Add it once and the day's shabad is there each morning. The lock screen widget page walks through the setup.
