so sikh sakhaa ba(n)dhap hai bhaiee j gur ke bhaane vich aavai ||
He alone is a Sikh, a friend, a relative and a sibling, who walks in the Way of the Guru's Will.
aapanai bhaanai jo chalai bhaiee vichhuR choTaa khaavai ||
One who walks according to his own will, O Siblings of Destiny, suffers separation from the Lord, and shall be punished.
bin satigur sukh kadhe na paavai bhaiee fir fir pachhotaavai ||1||
Without the True Guru, peace is never obtained, O Siblings of Destiny; again and again, he regrets and repents. ||1||
har ke dhaas suhele bhaiee ||
The Lord's slaves are happy, O Siblings of Destiny.
janam janam ke kilabikh dhukh kaaTe aape mel milaiee || rahaau ||
The sins and sorrows of countless lifetimes are eradicated; the Lord Himself unites them in His Union. ||Pause||

eih kuTa(n)b sabh jeea ke ba(n)dhan bhaiee bharam bhulaa sai(n)saaraa ||
All of these relatives are like chains upon the soul, O Siblings of Destiny; the world is deluded by doubt.
bin gur ba(n)dhan TooTeh naahee gurmukh mokh dhuaaraa ||
Without the Guru, the chains cannot be broken; the Gurmukhs find the door of salvation.
karam kareh gur sabadh na pachhaaneh mar janameh vaaro vaaraa ||2||
One who performs rituals without realizing the Word of the Guru's Shabad, shall die and be reborn, again and again. ||2||
hau meraa jag palach rahiaa bhaiee koi na kis hee keraa ||
The world is entangled in egotism and possessiveness, O Siblings of Destiny, but no one belongs to anyone else.
gurmukh mahal pain gun gaavan nij ghar hoi baseraa ||
The Gurmukhs attain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, singing the Glories of the Lord; they dwell in the home of their own inner being.
aaithai boojhai su aap pachhaanai har prabh hai tis keraa ||3||
One who understands here, realizes himself; the Lord God belongs to him. ||3||
satiguroo sadhaa dhiaal hai bhaiee vin bhaagaa kiaa paieeaai ||
The True Guru is forever merciful, O Siblings of Destiny; without good destiny, what can anyone obtain?
ek nadhar kar vekhai sabh uoopar jehaa bhaau tehaa fal paieeaai ||
He looks alike upon all with His Glance of Grace, but people receive the fruits of their rewards according to their love for the Lord.
naanak naam vasai man a(n)tar vichahu aap gavaieeaai ||4||6||
O Nanak, when the Naam, the Name of the Lord, comes to dwell within the mind, then self-conceit is eradicated from within. ||4||6||
End of the Hukamnama
Past seven days
What is a Hukamnama?
Each morning at Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, after Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is opened with prayer, the Granthi reads the shabad at the top of the left page the Guru opens to. That shabad is the Hukamnama, the Guru's order for the day. The word joins hukam, an order, and nama, a letter.
It is taken once and shared everywhere, so a Sikh in Amritsar and one in California read the same shabad that day. Many Sikhs read it after their morning Nitnem, or listen to it on the way to work, and carry a line of it through the day.
This page shows the day's Hukamnama in Gurmukhi with a transliteration and English translation, and the recording of it when one is available. The Simran app brings it to your phone each morning, with the lock screen widget showing the first line where you will see it first.
Frequently asked questions
What time is the Hukamnama taken?
It is taken at Sri Harmandir Sahib early in the morning, India time, and appears here soon after. India is twelve and a half hours ahead of California and five and a half hours ahead of London, so by the clock in North America the new Hukamnama usually arrives the evening before.
Why does the date look a day ahead of mine?
The date is the day in Amritsar, where the Hukamnama is taken. When it is Tuesday morning there it is still Monday evening in most of the Americas.
Can I read an earlier Hukamnama?
The past seven days are listed above. Each opens that day's full shabad in Gurmukhi with transliteration and English.
How do I get the Hukamnama on my lock screen?
The Simran app has a Daily Hukamnama widget for the lock screen on iPhone and Android. Add it once and the day's shabad is there each morning. The lock screen widget page walks through the setup.
